The best attractions in Torrevieja

Torrevieja

Torrevieja was once a small fishing village known for its salt production, located between two large salt lakes. Today it has grown into a lively coastal town about 50 km south of Alicante on the Costa Blanca.

The name Torrevieja comes from the Spanish words “Torre Vieja”, meaning “Old Tower.” Until 1802 the area consisted mainly of a watchtower. When salt production moved closer to the town in 1803, houses were built and the town slowly began to grow. Although the town was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1829, it was quickly rebuilt.

Today Torrevieja has around 90,000 residents and is a very popular destination for tourists, many of whom choose to live here all year round.

Las Salinas de Torrevieja
These famous salt lakes sometimes appear pink due to natural algae and minerals. You can visit them by car or take a small tourist train around the lake. It’s also a nice place for a peaceful walk while spotting birds and enjoying the scenery.

Parque de las Naciones
A beautiful park where you can relax in the shade or sit on one of the benches. Chickens and ducks roam freely and are used to visitors. The park also has playground equipment, making it a perfect place for families with children.

Torre Del Moro

The Torre del Moro is a historic watchtower located on the coast of Torrevieja. The tower is easily accessible and offers beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.

During warm summer days, the water parks around Torrevieja are a perfect outing for the whole family. Within a 10 to 15-minute drive you will find several fun water parks with slides, swimming pools and play areas for children.

Aquopolis Torrevieja
The largest water park in the region. Here you will find spectacular slides, a wave pool, a lazy river and special children's areas. There are also restaurants and grassy areas where you can relax between activities.

Quesada Aqua Park
A cosy and slightly smaller water park near Ciudad Quesada. Ideal for families with children, with various slides, swimming pools and green picnic areas.

Aquapark Flamingo
A small-scale water park with several pools and slides. Especially suitable for families with young children who want to enjoy a relaxed day of water fun.

💡 Tip: In July and August it can be very hot and busy. It is best to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Elche

Elche, also known as Elx in Valencian, is a beautiful city in the Valencia region of Spain. Here are some sights you should not miss during your visit:

1. Palmeral of Elche
The Palmeral is probably the biggest attraction in the centre of Elche. This palm grove was originally created by the Arabs and is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palm trees have been there since the 10th century and were brought to life using an ingenious irrigation system.

2. Basilica of Santa Maria
This basilica is located in the old town of Elche and is a beautiful building to admire. The entrance doors are enormous and decorated with detailed reliefs. Definitely worth a visit.

The reason the houses have such a characteristic look is that fishermen used the colorful buildings as landmarks to find their way back to the town from the sea.

Tabarca
